The Parkers have never been subtle, and this is no exception.

When Liz started to develop her crush on you, she was so pointedly understated that it didn't take you long to figure out. So you shamelessly led her on. String her along; see how serious she is. If this is just another infatuation, just another Max- forget it. You don't need her mispronounced G's, her overemphatic stories, her gorgeous chestnut hair and the way her dark eyes flash with-

But not if she doesn't like you. Not if you're just Max Version 2.0, Kyle the Third. So you set up little tests.

Like the herbal pills. You both know her dad won't approve, so there's the question: what's your choice, Liz? Him or me?

And she chooses you.

When you decided to cut school for three days to go to Vegas, you tease her and pry her away from her morals and her Max, barely even mentioning peer pressure, and she falls like a house of cards.

She chooses you.

That's why you figure that if she'll say something you'll go for it- and then, as days drag out to weeks and you can't spend more than ten minutes in the same room because she turns bright red and has to leave, you decide that if the right moment comes you'll let her know that you know.

That's why you're smart enough to know that when she's fumbling around her locker and trying not to really look while you change out of your ugly polyester Crashdown uniform, but her eyes keep trailing up to your bra and then snapping away- what she's really doing is waiting for you to make a move. And because of her big brown Bambi eyes and her long straight hair and the way her lips kind of catch up each time you catch her eyes?

Well, you're deliberately finding reasons to avoid putting on your shirt.
You never expected her to make the first move, so you're not really listening to her babbling about her and Max, about you and Michael, about Isabel and Tess…

But somehow the last words out of her mouth are hanging in the air and those words are "and I want to kiss you."

You're almost surprised by how much you reciprocate the feelings. You melt into it, lips meeting, faces cupped in unexpectedly strong hands, tongues dueling without any desire to win, the clasp of your bra toyed with like-

The rustle of someone's feet stepping away from the door. You don't try to think about it; just file it away for later knowledge as your hand snakes under Liz's uniform skirt and she moans. It couldn't have possibly been important, or at least, not nearly as important as this.

But when Liz's dad starts to study you, as subtly as he can, you realize he knows. He's trying to figure out how much he knows. He's rationalizing and overanalyzing and being just like Liz, really. Parker family trait.

If this keeps up, though, you and Mr. Parker are going to have to have a long talk about discretion being the better part of valor.

end.
