Bright Shiny Objects
Multifandom recs by people I trust, including me.

Glass_Onion
Not really a recs site, so much as an archive of fic posted on the fabulous Glass_Onion mailing list, and while we haven't read everything archived there, we can heartily recommend all the authors, so go. Read. Be amazed. See how the other half lives.

Polyamorous Recommendations
Good recs site for many fandoms, heavy on slash, but there's also some het and gen. Updated fairly frequently, too.

Recs Rainbow and We Read Crap So You Don't Have To
A lists recs sites in many, many fandoms, and when they update. If you can't find what you're looking for here, you're not even trying. (We Read Crap is no longer being updated; Recs Rainbow has taken its place.)

West Wing Fanfiction Review
Nice site with recs and other information. Obviously, all West Wing-related.

Your Mileage May Vary
Very good recs site - stop'n'shop for fic in many fandoms; saves time and energy, because you don't have to slog through the bad to get to the good. Heavy on X-Files.

Airs Water Places by vanzetti
Jack and Sark search for Sydney. Sharp, clean prose, dead on characterization, just an all around brilliant fic. (V)

Brigid by Voleuse
Sark likes dangerous women. And I like his thoughts on three of the most important women in his life. (V)

In Step by Nestra
Hot like a hot thing - second person UST between Syd and Vaughn that just burns. ::fans self:: did it get hot in here or what? (V)

Knock the Smile Off My Face by zara hemla
Dixon, sitting in the CIA lock-up, thinking. Marvelously in character, and heartrending. And the ending with Marshall is just perfect. (V)

Resenting Paris by Shrift
Weiss is in Paris on a mission, in place of Vaughn. He's meeting a contact, who turns out to be Alex Krycek. Hot up against the wall sex ensues. Nummy. (crossover with XF) (V)

arrowBend It Like Beckham

Friendship and Love by Claire
Bend It Like Beckham should inspire fic, because who *didn't* think Jules was in love with Jess? Well, Jules isn't sure, herself, and there's that whole Joe thing in the way, but she's working through it, and this fic follows her thoughts. (V)

The Chronicles of Narnia

Delight by Katie Vicieli
I should be ashamed. And I would be, if this weren't so damn hot. Edmund experiences the riches of the Tisroc. Guh. (NC-17. Slash) (V)

The Queen In Exile by Linda Marie
This story is painfully poignant and believable. Poor Lucy, having to grow up 'normal' (i.e., unnoticed and unloved, and so misunderstood) after being a Queen, and being banned from the world she loves so much. (V)

arrowEarthsea
There isn't much Earthsea fic out there, and I for one think that's a good thing. But this I whole-heartedly recommend, and not just because I beta'd it. *G*

Even Beyond All Other Lands by Bounce
Perfectly in character, this is an exquisite piece of writing that really captures Lebannen's longing for Ged. All beta bias aside, I really think this is a lovely fic. (V)

arrowFirefly

(ab)normal iteration (the water metaphor remix) by Jenny-O
Fluid and beautiful, and the last lines just blow me away: Am I water, changing and shifting like the sea? Or am I honey? and is this sweet? Also, read the original by Molly. 'Cause I can't get enough of that crazy space incest. (V)

Big Damn Zombies, Sir by Shrift
Zombie!Jayne! Monkey brains! Too many funny lines to quote. Absolutely hilarious and dead-on balls accurate characterization. (V)

Inadequate Comforts by Nicole Clevenger
River sees more than Mal would like. Post-War Stories, deals with the aftermath of Zoe's choice. Good River voice, and sharp, evocative prose. (V)

Logos (The Word Is the Life Remix) by Molly
A fabulous take on a good story by Te, and it gets right to the heart of what makes River, River and how she wants to be herself again, and how she believes Simon is the key to that. Just not, you know, in a way that Simon really ought to be. (V)

On the Mend by MollyTM
Lovely post-War Stories fic in which Kaylee and Mal discuss some things. (V)

So Long by Kate Elizabeth
Lovely Kaylee/Mal fic. Love takes time, and Kate is one of the best at detailing its growth with subtlety and realism and breath-taking rightness. There's also a coda, that takes place ten years after. (V)

arrow Gilmore Girls

Frozen by Megan Reilly
New Year's Eve. Stars Hollow. Luke makes an effort, but things don't really change. Subtle, bittersweet and in character. (V)

Irrevocable Night by Laura Smith
Luke and Lorelai and a moment. Sigh. Gorgeous and painful. (V)

Hot Cross Buns by Mala
Luke dreams in counterpoint to Lorelai's dreams in the season 3 premiere. Luke dreams, and you'll ache for him. (V)

The King of Practical Wisdom by Anna S.
::sniff:: Lorelai misses Rory, and Luke is there. Love Luke. Love him! (V)

Like a Second Chance by Nestra
Oh, I love this. Luke is there for Lorelai, and he's not sleeping, and after all this time, something's got to give. And it does. He finally takes the chance, and it's not pity and it's everything he imagined, and more. Beautiful, romantic and moving. This fic gives me a big happy. (V)

Mimi by Megan Reilly
Lorelai is jealous of herself. It's complicated (it shouldn't be, but this is Lorelai we're talking about) and involves her new nom de diner and a brief, poignant kiss. Lovely Lorelai POV. (V)

Reality Check by Nestra
One day, Luke will kiss Lorelai. Oh, god, I hope so. I love Nestra's Luke; she gets right inside his head. I think we need to tie Nestra down and force her to write more Luke/Lorelai. (V)

Smart Is Sexy by Amy
Paris Geller meets Chloe Sullivan. I asked for this, and boy, did Amy deliver. Paris doesn´t know why Chloe likes her, "and when Chloe kisses her she gets so buzzed, although she could never tell whether it was from the caffeine, the alcohol, or the kiss." Love the smart, insecure, socially awkward journalist girls! (Crossover with Smallville) (V)

arrowGood Omens

The Best Christmas Ever by Amy
Christmas in Lower Tadfield really *is* the Best Christmas Ever, every single year. Aside from the gleeful irony of the whole *idea* of the Antichrist celebrating the perfect (secular) Christmas, this story is a warm and comforting way to play catch-up with some characters I love. (V)

California Dreaming by daegaer
Crowley is called to account by Hell's accounting department. The Hellmouth in Sunnydale is his road home. Yes, Good Omens meets Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Better on the GO than on the BtVS, but still, a damn funny story. (V)

Cumulative Effort by magpie
This is a lovely Crowley/Aziraphale story that charts their relationship - with desire and with each other - over a few thousand years. Lovely and in character (there are a few typos, but nothing to stop you from reading it). (V)

Flights of Angels by daegaer
I'll keep my mouth shut about wingfic in general, but this fic is the anti-wingfic. Crowley and Aziraphale learn the bitter truth of “use it or lose it” and have to deal with the effects of losing their wings. Touching and bittersweet and lovely. (V)

Going Home by daegaer
Aziraphale is called home. How will Crowley deal? Well, by trying to break his friend out of Heaven, of course. Just wonderful. (V)

Growing Season by Kathleen Anne
Aziraphale takes charge of Crowley's plants, with unexpected results. I enjoyed this a lot - the banter is witty and in character. A great slice-of-life story. (V)

Home Is Where the Heart Is by daegaer
Good Omens/Dogma crossover. I still have not seen Dogma, so I'm a little lost on the Loki and Bartleby business, but the Aziraphale/Crowley interaction is too sweet and fun to miss. (V)

It Came Upon a Midnight Clear by daegaer
Hee! Aziraphale leads the heavenly host in reporting the news of Jesus' birth, but the shepherds are having a hard time keeping their wits. Meanwhile, Crowley's got a bit of annunciating to do himself, though he'll get in trouble if Hell discovers what he's done. Funny, evocative of the book, could easily slide into canon. I loved it. (V)

Living Arrangements by Afrai
Aziraphale has a bit of a problem. He calls Crowley. They move in together. Things get weird, then they get better, and then they get much, much worse. Lovely and sad. (V)

Twofish by a demon of my word
Crowley and Aziraphale get drunk and stuff happens. I'm less fond of the second chapter than I am of the first, which seems to nail the characters perfectly, but overall, a really good fic. (V)

arrowHeathers

Winner Takes All by Amy
Heather/Heather fic. Guh. Sharp observations of the interaction between the ringleader and her second-in-command. Hot and in character and just... you'll never look at croquet or cliquey girls the same way again. (V)

Homicide

Adena 1950 by Scott
Possibly the best piece of fanfiction I've ever read, this fic is long, but totally engrossing. The Adena Watson case, circa 1950, in the style of James Ellroy. Absolutely fabulous. I'm so happy the link works again! Archived at 11 Cents. (V)

All Is Calm and All Is Bright by Seana Renay
Frank visits Tim in prison at Christmas time. Oh, the guilt, the conversation, the perfect Frankentim-ness of it all will break your heart. (V)

Care Package by Saundra Mitchell
The beginning of the Care Package series, in which Bayliss and Kellerman share some beer and cookies. (Slash, Bayliss/Kellerman) (V)

Closing Time by violet
The Mikey-Meldrick conversation we all wish they'd had. (V)

The Flood by Luna and Jessica
Bayliss causes trouble for the Bartlet administration. (WW/H:LotS crossover) (Slash) (V)

Four Beers and a Ride Home by Saundra Mitchell
Frank wants to understand -- he wants an experience. Bayliss gives it to him. It's weird for them both. (Mild slashy themes) (V)

Gee's Clues by Saundra Mitchell.
Cross Homicide with Blue's Clues and what do you get? (V)

Losing My Religion by Raquel
Kellerman speaks with the one person who just might understand. (At the 11 Cents Archive) (V)

Permanently Offline by Wendi Jeff and Saundra Mitchell
Online fans of a cop show visit Baltimore, bringing trouble to the Homicide squad. Fic and meta-fic, all in one fun-filled package. (V)

Shadows by Wendi and Patricia
Hollywood invades the squadroom in order to get the skinny on a new cop show being produced. Meta-fic and fic once again. (archived at 11 Cents) (V)

Shell Casing by Scott
The archetypical Homicide fic -- Frankentim looking for evidence at a crime scene (At the 11 Cents Archive) (V)

The Way to Leave Things by Aidan Hayes
Mikey has a few choice words for Meldrick in the aftermath of Fallen Heroes. (V)

arrowMaster and Commander (movieverse)

Like Distance, Like Time by Nifra Idril
Hollom finds his courage. I love how each line is heavy with the weight Hollom is carrying - the weight that he's too old to be where he still is, that Warley died when it should have been him, that he's coming to believe the men's superstitions, and that he finally finds the strength to act and it buoys him up against the load he carries, even as it sinks him down into the sea. Lovely. (V)

Sounding by hossgal
All beta bias aside, this is a wonderful bit of character exploration that feels as if it could be slotted right into the movie. Aubrey's dreams take him somewhere he'd never go in daylight, and hossgal gets his character *down*. The use of language is lovely and sensual; we drown with Jack as he sinks beneath the surface. (V)

Three Ways to End an Acquaintance by Shalott
Lovely fic, examining three possible outcomes of a duel between Aubrey and Maturin. (V)

arrowMinority Report

Now by Melymbrosia
Written for the defining moments challenge, Mely takes us inside the mind of Agatha Lively from Minority Report and does it in a way you'll never forget. (V)

arrowNorthern Exposure

Oy Magic by Smara
Northern Exposure fic! Whee! Joel and Chris and blowjobs around a fire at the full moon. Guh. And a really good Joel-voice, I thought, which was necessary to make me believe this, because me? I adored Fleischman/O'Connell in all its irritating push-me/pull-you glory. But Chris... mmm... (V)

arrowPirates of the Caribbean

Out of His Depth by Gloria Mundi
Oddly, I haven't recced any PotC fic, mainly because I haven't read much of it, though I have a list of links. But I really enjoyed this, with Will getting the tour of Tortuga, and discovering that Jack's beautifully tanned skin lingers in his mind's eye. They go for an unexpected moonlight swim, and Will realizes what he wants. Lovely. (V)

arrowSandman

Alike in Ignorance by Eleanor K.
Desire intrudes on Dream's meeting with Hob Gadling. Amazingly lovely, in character (and Dream/Desire is a hard sell), and hot, with lush prose and an aching sense of need and confusion. *g* Brilliant. (V)

The Boy Who Gave Away His Birthday by Mary Borsellino
Lovely fic about a boy who falls in love with Dream. (V)

arrowSports Night

Five Things That Never Happened (to Dan Rydell) by Shrift
Exactly what the title says - five things that never happened to Dan Rydell, but could have. Heartbreaking, wonderful, pitch-perfect. (V)

Flirtational Theory by Shrift.
Dan explains a few things to Casey. Casey tries to process. This fic is so spot-on, in character, and just perfect in every way. So even though I don't generally see Dan/Casey, I love this story. Love. It. (V)

Go Thy Way, Daniel by Marguerite
Dan disintegrates. Casey watches, and tries to do something about it. Subtle, beautiful, painful and true. Marguerite broke my Danny, but she did it so exquisitely that I can't fault her for it. If you don't cry, you must have a heart of stone. (V)

In My Dreams I Slashed Your Tyres by cgb
Christine tackles pre-CSC Dana-Casey-Dan and does it with a brilliant Dana POV. We've all been at this dinner party, with the sniping married couple, too much wine, and the desperate need to believe that it will change someday but the inability to do anything about it just yet.

Naissance by bj
Casey's having a New York renaissance of his own during the holidays. Aching and wistful look at how the familiar can be magical when viewed from a different angle, and the language and imagery is lovely, and I'm not saying that just because I, like Danny, love my city. (Ignore the annoying stylistic tic of non-capitalization in the parentheticals. I do.) (V)

A quote:
he will open the door of his building and be halfway down the stairs before he sees. danny. standing at the curb. a sparkly green plastic top hat in his hands, a noisemaker sticking out of his coat pocket. confetti scattered across his shoulders. a lonely look, a strange and wrong look on his face. happy new year, danny, casey will say. in the stairwell, danny's mouth will taste like champagne and on the couch his skin will taste like time.

Nutrition and Other Needs by Pearl-o
Danny goes to LA without Casey. Erica gets everything right here - Dan and Dana's work-centric friendship without Casey to bind them, Jeremy's bridal nerves, and most importantly, Dan and Casey's relationship, with everything that goes unspoken, and regrets that linger.

To Casey on his Thirty-Fifth Birthday by Mosca
Mosca gets Dan's voice perfect as he wrestles with telling Casey how he feels about him. (V)

Ubivis by bj
Dan is not fine. But he's working on it, with Abby, with Casey. And bj gets Dan, gets right inside him and his doubt and hurt and anger, and his desire to get better, fast. (V)

arrow Star Trek

Shutter (Seven Years Disappeared Remix) by Rebeckah
This remix and the original it's based on are the first, last and probably only Voyager fic I've ever read, but I really liked them. The remix has some great lines - Suddenly I saw yet another facet of this stranger. She was a rebel. A quiet rebel, uninterested in forming an army to join in her rebellion, but a rebel nonetheless. I really like how this takes the original by Tahlia and tells the story from the other POV. (V)

arrowStar Wars

This is Martha Wilson's site and I recommend everything listed there. Especially The Arandu Series. For those who question why the Original Trilogy was better, I give you Han Solo. My first fictional boyfriend. *swoon* (V)

arrowWicked

Like Magic by Amy
Wicked Fic! Woo! Amy takes the delicate yet enduring and complicated relationship between Galinda and Elphaba and makes it tangible; you'll ache for them both while reading this set of linked drabbles, because the language is both precise and elliptical, and wonderfully evocative in the bargain. (V)

arrowX-Files

After Hours by Shannono
A series of unconnected smutty vignettes featuring our favorite FBI agents. Two words, both Hubba! (P)

Always Like This by Ellen M.
A beautifully written piece of fiction, with Scully wondering why all the important conversations with Mulder go like this. (V)

Check Gages by Shannono
Alone in the middle of nowhere, and the car runs out of gas. Don't ya just hate that? (P)

Hurricane Alex by Shannono
Mulder and Scully get stuck in the middle of a hurricane. (P)

Oblation (Like a Prayer Remix) by MaidenJedi
I don't read a lot of X-Files fic, but this worked for me - I thought it was a great match to the original by Kest, giving the Skinner POV. The prose is detailed and evocative - I could feel the dampness and the tension and the couch cushions as I read. (V)

The Use of Maps (Without Boundaries Remix) by darkstar
Like most of darkstar's fic, this story is just heartrending and beautiful. Mulder tries to find his way back to a lost Scully. (V)
