In
Their Own Words

August 2001
This
is the section where some of our favorite authors will share with
us (and you) their favorite stories from among their own work. The
lovely and talented Pix mentioned this idea to me in an e-mail,
saying how she thought it might be an interesting contrast with
the typical recommendations lists so prevalent on fan fic websites.
I,
of course, immediately wondered the same thing, and so, here we
are. This will be a weekly feature, with past Authors' Picks being
archived on a page called "From
the Desk of..."
So,
let us begin...
This
week we have the Shanna, well-known Wesley-lover and writer of the
great Cordy-fic Holiday at the Hyperion. Click on the name of the
story within the text below if you'd like to read it.

It's
funny how the creative process works. This story sprang from a comment
that someone outside the US found it frustrating that she couldn't
read any of my stories because they contained Season 2 spoilers.
So, I decided to try to write a season 1 story. It was a real challenge
because the characters all changed so much during the course of
season 2 that it was hard to recapture their season 1 personas and
voices. At the same time, this story served as a sort of writing
exercise for me. I'd never written a real ensemble story that required
multiple viewpoints and simultaneous action among all the characters.
Even so, once I started writing, the story seemed to write itself,
spinning totally out of control into near-epic length. I finished
it in the course of one long weekend.
It's
almost as fun to go back and re-read it as it was to write it. I
feel like I captured these characters at an interesting point in
their lives, when things were still relatively simple and innocent
-- before Faith showed up to teach Wesley a bitter lesson about
good intentions not being enough, before prophecy made them all
realize this was much bigger than they thought, before Wolfram and
Hart began their vendetta against Angel and before Cordelia's eyes
were really opened to the suffering in the world. All they had to
worry about was solving their next case, killing a few demons and
paying their bills. Nobody's soul was really at stake. That was
a fun period in the show, and while I've enjoyed all the darkness
and complexity that have been layered on top of this initial situation
of a vampire private detective and his associates, it's still nice
to revisit these more innocent times.

there you have it Shanna, in her own words...
