In Their Own Words

8 August 2001

This is the section where some of our favorite authors will share with us (and you) their favorite stories from among their own work. The lovely and talented Pix mentioned this idea to me in an e-mail, saying how she thought it might be an interesting contrast with the typical recommendations lists so prevalent on fan fic websites.

I, of course, immediately wondered the same thing, and so, here we are. This will be a weekly feature, with past Authors' Picks being archived on a page called "From the Desk of..."

So, let us begin...

It's Luna's turn this week. Some of you may know her as Violet. She writes amazing West Wing fic, and is pretty handy with Homicide musicals, as well. Click on the name of the story within the text below if you'd like to read it.

Luna says...

Behaving myself, I'm only picking three, and they're all West Wing 'cause I've done my best writing there:

Life's Rich Pageant

It's kind of a vision of the future that is neither idyllic nor tragic. Twenty years from now the people we know are older and grayer and (maybe) wiser. Nobody lives happily ever after, exactly, and some of them are surprised at what's making them happy, but their stories continue. I love this one because I can see it, in my head; her garden, his kitchen, and everything and everyone. It showed up that way, fully formed, in the wee hours of the morning. I love that it came so easily, that it's largely angst-free but not too chipper and chirpy. I love that life goes on.

Men Get Lost Sometimes

This was a "Somebody's Going To Emergency..." post-ep, and the title is also from "New York Minute" by Don Henley. I've written a lot of drunken banter stories, and I'm contented with all of them, but this one is a good sample. I made myself smile with this one and everyone was talking to me and it has all kinds of storyline continuity. So. Yeah.

Dance, Then, Wherever You May Be — written with Cinnamon

Aaron Sorkin made a reference to an elementary school shooting in "Bartlet's Third State Of The Union" and we're convinced it was a shoutout to this story, which was written about a month before that episode aired. This is a story where people actually do work. It has people doing their jobs. It has funny. It has sad. It has elements of backstory we've made up. It has Neil Sedaka and Ahmet Ertegun. It's the best episode-style thing we've ever written, and it was hard, but we're proud.

So there you have it — Luna aka Violet, in her own words...
