"Any writer, I suppose, feels that the world into which he was born is nothing less than a conspiracy against the cultivation of his talent -- which attitude certainly
has a great deal to support it."

In Their Own Words

11 July 2001

This is the section where some of our favorite authors will share with us (and you) their favorite stories from among their own work. The lovely and talented Pix mentioned this idea to me in an e-mail, saying how she thought it might be an interesting contrast with the typical recommendations lists so prevalent on fan fic websites.

I, of course, immediately wondered the same thing, and so, here we are. This will be a weekly feature (we hope), with past Authors' Picks being archived on a page called "From the Desk of..."

So, let us begin...

Today we have Bramble, who many of you may know from her amazing Josh/Donna stories, "Better vs. Nice," "Quiet Time," and the hilarious "Lions and Tigers and Clowns, Oh My," among others. Click on the name of the story within the text below if you'd like to read it.

Bramble says...

Bad Q Rising

This is an idea I had from when I first saw Q, um, I mean Al Kiefer on The West Wing in 20 Hours in LA. I mean, it's Q! That just screams cross-over. So, I wanted to do it for a while but was very intimidated. I mean, the two shows don't really seem very mix-able.

That said, I just jumped in and started and thankfully, since I had decided to kind of mold it after the Star Trek Episode, Q-Pid, it kind of wrote itself. (I mean, who can't see Toby being Worf in that episode?)

So, that's one of my favorites just because I was really overwhelmed with the idea of doing it but I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out.

Problems

This was the second fic I ever wrote and the first time I tried to write Sam or Toby and I just still really like it. It totally wrote itself -- I had an inner Toby living in my head while I was working on it.

My favorite aspect of WW fic is writing dialogue and I had a great time making Toby, Sam, and Josh bond and talk about Josh's thing for Donna in a local DC bar.

Okay, I lied, I have an honorable mention. I am an attention-whore :)

Cycles

I really like this because it's one of the more serious fics I've written (not many of those -- can count them all on one hand). I had an idea for a story about Mrs. Landingham's death, Josh and Donna's weird, non-couple couple relationship, and him being so close to her that he even knows when she has her period. Three things that seem kind of odd but I was very satisfied with the finished product.

So there you have it -- Bramble, in her own words...
