In
Their Own Words
16
January 2002
This
is the section where some of our favorite authors will share with
us (and you) their favorite stories from among their own work. The
lovely and talented Pix mentioned this idea to me in an e-mail,
saying how she thought it might be an interesting contrast with
the typical recommendations lists so prevalent on fan fic websites.
I,
of course, immediately wondered the same thing, and so, here we
are. This will be a weekly feature, with past Authors' Picks being
archived on a page called "From
the Desk of..."
So,
let us begin...
This week, we have Jori and MoJo, who write separately
and together, in fandoms from X-Files and JAG to West Wing and,
in MoJo's case, X-Men Movieverse. They are fabulously talented and
also co-moderators of the always fun State of the Union list.

MoJo and Jori say...
Liberal
Arts
- West Wing FF
MoJo:
When I was a starving art student in college back the early 90's,
the National Endowment for the Arts caught a lot of flack for sponsoring
such controversial artists as Robert Mapplethorpe ('The Perfect
Moment' exhibition) and Andres Serrano ('Piss Christ'). The local
paper ran an article about how the NEA recently received more funding
and reinstated the individual grants program. And a story idea was
born - on Big Block of Cheese Day, Sam makes an artist recommendation
he shouldn't.
Jori:
Back when I was younger and I would take a lot of art classes, a
friend and I would joke about scultping certain male organs and
we wanted to make them the exact height of awful boyfriends. Someday,
I would have a gallery of them, was the joke. When MoJo approached
me with this story idea, it just seemed like a good natured way
to use that little item from my past in a story and have Sam and
Ainsley stumble into something . . . odd. And they certainly did.

Campaign
Promises - West Wing FF
Jori:
I loved the way Josh looked at Donna when she was answering his
phone in 'In The Shadow of Two Gunmen.' We had to write a story
using this, but instead of having their relationship be a slow burning
thing, it would heat up fast. Too fast. Then when I watched '17
People' and discovered she left him, that just gave us even more
layers to use. Of course, most people know how it will end but not
why it ends that way.
MoJo:
The challenge for me, for both us, is trying to keep this in canon
as much as possible so it's believable by fitting as much established
facts into the story itself. We want you to watch '17 People', hear
Donna say 'Joshua, Josh, Josh' and have another explanation for
his reaction to those words. The trick with this story - and any
stories set in the past - is everyone already knows the ending.
We just have to get the story back to what you see now.

Dust
Mites - X-Files FF
MoJo:
Out of everything we've ever written, this is my favorite because
we had the best time writing it. We took every XF cliche we would
possibly think of and threw it all in one story. We made fun of
everything, but most importantly, we made fun of ourselves and our
own writing. It's good not to take yourself too seriously and we
definitely don't. We try to have fun and we hope our readers have
fun, too.
Jori:
How could you not like a story that features Mulder using Scully's
pleasure puff in the shower and talking about cowdroids on the phone?
It was a lot of fun to write and we just kept picking more cliches
out of the stuff we had already written and throwing them in there.
It gave us a chance to have fun at our own expense.

So
there you have it Jori & MoJo, in their own words...
