In
Their Own Words
24
October 2001
This
is the section where some of our favorite authors will share with
us (and you) their favorite stories from among their own work. The
lovely and talented Pix mentioned this idea to me in an e-mail,
saying how she thought it might be an interesting contrast with
the typical recommendations lists so prevalent on fan fic websites.
I,
of course, immediately wondered the same thing, and so, here we
are. This will be a weekly feature, with past Authors' Picks being
archived on a page called "From
the Desk of..."
So,
let us begin...
This
week, we have Te, late of X-Men, but also a well-known writer in
the Buffy-Angel and X-Files fandom. Don't forget, next week, we'll
hear from both Jane and Te, so don't go anywhere! <G>

to read it.
Te
says...
1)
X-Files:
Trust
This
is the story where I proved to myself that I could successfully
write (and complete) something longer than ten pages. This is also
the story in which I proved to myself that there is nothing I wouldn't
do to myself to get a story finished. I pretty much had a breakdown
while writing this story, and, well, I still think it's worth it.
Basically, I took a piece of Chris Carter's convoluted canon and
made it make sense. Well, made it make sense to *me*, in any case.
I like it because it has an actual plot. I like it because the sex
doesn't solve a thing. I like it because it still makes me want
to commit ritual suicide.
2)
X-Files:
Ever After series
This
all started because I had an image in my head of Skinner and Krycek
smiling at each other across a kitchen table. I *wanted* that image,
but it didn't fit in any of the WIPs I had going at the time, so...
I built a story around it. A dark, painful, brutal story, but I
damned well made the image fit. <laughs> There are a lot of
good moments in this series, things I still wouldn't change even
if I sat down and rewrote the thing. I like it because I found a
different way to talk about love and necessity and creative suicide.
I like it because it reminded me why I loved Mulder, in a weird
way.
3)
Angel:
Whore
One
of my absolutely favorite things about writing fan fiction is the
way that it can make you *understand* a character, even one you
previously wish would just, you know, *die*. Like Darla. After I
wrote this, the Darla arc was suddenly just one of the coolest things
I'd ever seen. Writing this story made me *get* her, and maybe fall
in love a little.
4)
Due
South: Absence
Due
South was a funny, quirky, sweet show. You see that a lot in the
fanfic written for it. Due South was also an *edgy* show with disturbing
moments of darkness. You really don't see that in the fanfic written
for it. *snerk* As a matter of fact, a great deal of the fen will
actively *harass* you if you post something like... well, this.
I
like this because it let me get to know Ray Vecchio. I like the
way it explores some of the... other possibilities inherent to his
relationship with Fraser. It's got a real bite to it, I think, and
that makes me happy. <g>
5)
Highlander:
Rising
This
is another one of those "hey, wait a minute, he's actually kinda
cool!" stories. In this case, the he in question is Duncan. It's
a sequel of sorts to Kat Allison's brilliant Parting Glass, and
I think I managed to stay true to the original. This story is dark,
painful, and somewhat stylized. I think I made it work, though...
I like some of the imagery I came up with, too.
Okay, that's enough of that.
Thanks
for letting me talk about myself. <g>

So
there you have it Te, in her own words...
