In Their Own Words

17 October 2001

This is the section where some of our favorite authors will share with us (and you) their favorite stories from among their own work. The lovely and talented Pix mentioned this idea to me in an e-mail, saying how she thought it might be an interesting contrast with the typical recommendations lists so prevalent on fan fic websites.

I, of course, immediately wondered the same thing, and so, here we are. This will be a weekly feature, with past Authors' Picks being archived on a page called "From the Desk of..."

So, let us begin...

This week, we have Jane St Clair, late of X-Men fame, but also a shining star in the Buffy-Angel and West Wing firmaments. Next week, we'll hear from her sometime-partner in copyright infringement, Te, and then the week after that - both of them on the stuff they've written together. <G>

Jane says...

So. Hmmm. Of my own work, what's my favourite? Well, I have a couple, so...

Of my recent solo stuff, the one I'm happiest with is "Boundaries of Wisdom."  Because it started out to be a jump-me-take-me PWP and ended up working out some real issues I had with the materia. Because the canon Northstar's so sensitive about the way he's perceived, and because there's this issue of how one gay character and one straight-but-curious character manage to be friends. And I think that came through.

Of everything I've done, the work I'm most fond of is the Restaurant Dogs series ('Angel' slash). Because I was just starting to think about Gunn when I started writing 'Chaparral', and suddenly his voice was so vivid for me, and he turned out to be so much fun. If I had to pick just one of the stories from that series, it would probably be 'Restaurant Dogs,' because I think I did the best job with that one of holding onto Gunn's voice and letting him be not just someone chasing sex, but someone who's cheerfully enjoying making everyone else uncomfortable. And because it was the first time I ever wrote Ethan Rayne, and it was how I discovered how much fun *he* is.

So there you have it — Jane, in her own words...
