In Their Own Words

10 October 2001

This is the section where some of our favorite authors will share with us (and you) their favorite stories from among their own work. The lovely and talented Pix mentioned this idea to me in an e-mail, saying how she thought it might be an interesting contrast with the typical recommendations lists so prevalent on fan fic websites.

I, of course, immediately wondered the same thing, and so, here we are. This will be a weekly feature, with past Authors' Picks being archived on a page called "From the Desk of..."

So, let us begin...

This week, we have Kim of The West Wing fame. Kim writes funny, sexy, flat-out enjoyable fic.. Click on the name of the story within the text below if you'd like to read it.

Kim says...

Okay, so this could change cause I have a love/hate/kinda enjoy relationship with my writing. Right now my favorite of my own is One-Liners. Why? It was probably my third or fourth attempt at fan fic. I had written a couple others and then I had a major brain block. I couldn't really think of any other ideas and everything I started just didn't work out. Then I watched 17 People and I finally knew what I wanted to do. In that last scene with Josh and Donna, Donna walks off to leave Josh standing there and watching her. I wanted to write what went through his brain after that scene cut off. I love to write the Josh POV. One-Liners is what really made me discover this. It practically wrote itself and everything just sounded right. I like to show how Josh has so much power and control with his job, but with other things (especially Donna) he's confused and has no clue what to do. My goal was to make this point clear to the reader.

The end product was short but it's exactly what I wanted.

So there you have it — Kim, in her own words...
