In Their Own Words

26 September 2001

This is the section where some of our favorite authors will share with us (and you) their favorite stories from among their own work. The lovely and talented Pix mentioned this idea to me in an e-mail, saying how she thought it might be an interesting contrast with the typical recommendations lists so prevalent on fan fic websites.

I, of course, immediately wondered the same thing, and so, here we are. This will be a weekly feature, with past Authors' Picks being archived on a page called "From the Desk of..."

So, let us begin...

It's the lovely and talented Donna Bevan's turn. Donna is a renowned writer in the X-Men and Roswell fandoms, and she can seriously bring the angst. And the smut. <g> Click on the name of the story within the text below if you'd like to read it.

Donna says...

My favorite story in any fandom is a recent one I did for Roswell titled "Aperture." I'm not sure why, but there's something about it that rings very true to the characters for me. It's angsty and horrible and not a happy story in pretty much any respect. In fact, it's very much an emotional worst case scenario for Michael and Isabel.

Of course, as an AngstGrrl, that's a theme that greatly appeals to me - when you've lost everything, where do you begin to rebuild? Can you? Do you even care enough to try? The idea started with that question and was urged onward by some spoilers for the end of the second season. Before I knew it, I'd inserted some sort of elaborately strange photography analogy, and there it was.

It's not a story that's garnered a lot of feedback for me. That honor definitely goes to the Adaptations series from X-Men moviefic. But I still feel like "Aperture" was far better work than anything else I've written, fic-wise. Like a lot of writers, I tend to remain emotionally unaffected by my own work, instead viewing it with a critical eye and wondering what I could have done to make it better. But I'm totally happy with "Aperture." I read it and I cry. That's the highest recommendation I can give any piece of writing, and I'm beyond proud of this fic because of that.

So there you have it — Donna, in her own words...
