In
Their Own Words

September 2001
This
is the section where some of our favorite authors will share with
us (and you) their favorite stories from among their own work. The
lovely and talented Pix mentioned this idea to me in an e-mail,
saying how she thought it might be an interesting contrast with
the typical recommendations lists so prevalent on fan fic websites.
I,
of course, immediately wondered the same thing, and so, here we
are. This will be a weekly feature, with past Authors' Picks being
archived on a page called "From
the Desk of..."
So,
let us begin...
This
week we have the wonderful (and medically accurate) Khaki, who writes
lots of Logan/Rogue stories with one thing in common: there's usually
hospital angst. Click on the name of the story within the text below
if you'd like to read it.
Khaki
says...
My
favorite story isn't my best work technically-speaking, but I still
love it. It's In
Sickness and in Health. The reason why I like it so much
is that it was my very first solo fan fic. Everything I'd written
before that was done in Round Robin format.
It took me a few months and several group writing projects before
I finally took a deep breath and sent out a story that I alone could
be blamed for. In the process, I discovered my calling: Logan sufferin'
seasoned with medical tech-talk. I relished putting Logan through
the torment and frustration of a stroke and enjoyed even more working
out a way for him to heal. Contrary to some reader's beliefs, in
real life I am not a doctor, nurse, scientist, or medical professional
in any way. I just like ER and TLC real-life medical dramas a bit
too much for my own good. All my facts come from these shows and
about 15-20 minutes of internet surfing.
Not only did I enjoy the technical side of the story, though, I
also got to meet Anna (named for a co-worker's baby and not Anna
Paquin as so many believe). There's nothing like a three-year-old
for straight-talk and complete honesty. I loved exploring Logan's
relationship with her. I just see him as being a wonderful father
and really enjoyed writing their interaction.
Just as fun as writing and tormenting my characters, I discovered
the heady pleasures of reader torture. There's nothing like a good
cliffhanger to get the death-threats pouring in. I know; I'm a bit
twisted, but I found myself enjoying the threats so much more than
the compliments that I pushed part seven to the extreme. Never before
or since have I gotten such a reader response to a part in my stories.
Sure, it's not fair to knock Logan and his three-year-old daughter
off a roof and leave them in free fall until the next day, but whoever
said writers had to be fair? ;-)

there you have it Khaki, in her own words...
