In Their Own Words

5 September 2001

This is the section where some of our favorite authors will share with us (and you) their favorite stories from among their own work. The lovely and talented Pix mentioned this idea to me in an e-mail, saying how she thought it might be an interesting contrast with the typical recommendations lists so prevalent on fan fic websites.

I, of course, immediately wondered the same thing, and so, here we are. This will be a weekly feature, with past Authors' Picks being archived on a page called "From the Desk of..."

So, let us begin...

This week we have the amazingly talented Pix, who is responsible for this whole shebang. She writes exquisite West Wing fanfic, including the beautiful "Crash Into Me" series (despite her claims to the contrary, it's simply fabulous) and my personal favorite, "Galatea." Click on the name of the story within the text below if you'd like to read it.

Pix says...

"Stay"
I sometimes worry that I don't write enough dialogue to really qualify as a WWfic writer. This was the one time I think I managed to capture both the ambiguity of the current J/D relationship and the elliptical dialogue you hear on the show, so I like it for those reasons.

"Galatea"
Which is where I more or less take back that whole thing on the dialogue, I guess! <g> I like this one for a few reasons -- first, because I could write the story around the myth fairly easily and, in fact, had one of those forehead-slapping moments where I was like, "why didn't I see the parallels earlier?" Second, because it was one of the few times where I caught myself thinking as the characters without much effort. Third, because I tend to be wordy and this is one of the few stories that hops over the course of years without taking thousands of words to get there.

"Coyote Morning"
I have this love-hate relationship with first-person writing; it's easy to do, but I don't have the same narrative license to get inside characters' heads or get descriptive. But I do like this first-person piece because I managed to finally "show, not tell" everything I wanted to. Plus, I think parts are funny -- and although I'm not known for being a terribly comic writer, I do like it when I can actually work my sense of humor into a piece.

And my surprising unfavorite ...
The Crash Into Me series
Man, oh man, this was my first foray into fic and it shows. If I had it to do over again, I'd completely rework the series.

So there you have it — Pix, in her own words...
