"Any writer, I suppose, feels that the world into which he was born is nothing less than a conspiracy against the cultivation of his talent -- which attitude certainly
has a great deal to support it."

In Their Own Words

27 June 2001

This is the section where some of our favorite authors will share with us (and you) their favorite stories from among their own work. The lovely and talented Pix mentioned this idea to me in an e-mail, saying how she thought it might be an interesting contrast with the typical recommendations lists so prevalent on fan fic websites.

I, of course, immediately wondered the same thing, and so, here we are. This will be a weekly feature (we hope), with past Authors' Picks being archived on a page called "From the Desk of..."

So, let us begin...

First up, Jen, aka, Yasminke, who some of you may know from her Angel stories, "Night Ride in the Canyon," "Hell's Rejects," and "A Wizard in Oz," among others. Click on the names of the stories within the text below if you'd like to read them.

Jen says...

Of the stories that I've had the khutspe/cojones/guts to post (some are so maudlin they never make it onto my hard drive, let alone off of it), I can't decide which I like best. MWAHAHAH...

Okay, seriously or Vic will get irked. Of my fanfiction, I'd have to choose two: "Hell's Rejects" and "Night Ride in the Canyon."

Both deal with my favorite uber-demons: Lillith and Ashmodai. Both characters are portrayed differently than they are in my other, non-fanfiction stuff, and rely more on Jewish lore than my own warped imagination. Which is saying a lot since Ashmodai only shows up in two or three stories.

"Hell's Rejects" was a catharsis for me, and the original had the poor guy dying. I am pleased I rewrote it and Wesley gets to live, even though he'll be on a liquid diet for a while. The description in "Night Ride" was difficult to exact, since I stink at descriptions, so I am pleased with the way it turned out.

As an extra-added bonus, Jen has also shared her favorites by her fellow writers here at Unfit. Don't worry, no one else will be indulging us in this egregious display of shameless self-promotion.

Pete:
"Homecoming" and "Promises" are two of my faves. I can't foresee Willow entering into an abusive relationship, but Pete described her desperation, fear and anxiety so well it made me sniffle. "Promises" is a scenario I *can* see happening, and I just liked the story very much -- waiting for the next installment.

For his humor bits, without a doubt: "Ode to the Chickenman." That was priceless, an real gem.

But honestly, my absolute favorite of Pete's is not finished and not fanfiction. And it's not HERNE, but it is -- dare I say it? -- mushy.

Meg:
I think "The Anti-Mary Sues" is a laugh riot, because she captured *us* so phenomenally well. But it's *frosted* brown sugar cinnamon, dang it.

"The Song Remains the Same" is the most groan-worthy funny.

"Underground" is absolutely amazing and depicts the angst and relief, and characterization, so very well.

Of her non-BVS fanfic, "Love in B Flat" (ST) is lovely. It shows how much we give to our partners in a relationship, yet how much easier it would be if we just talked more. It's just very, very well written.

Of Meg's original fiction "Working with Her Hands" is abfab. So good in fact, I sent it 'round the world. Of course, there is still "The Garden Story" (note: this story is not archived) which is wonderful, even if incomplete, and the first thing of Meg's I read. I've despised her ever since.

Vic:
X-Men: "The Soiled Dove" hands down. Vic should write noir more often. (<Dot> With original characters.</Dot>)

BVS: I like "The Broken Series" because of the angst. I likes my angst, you see. But "In the Service of the Queen" is my favourite, because it's based on folklore and the characterization is fantastic, the descriptions lovely. ("The Rain King" -- you see, Vic, I do listen to the tapes.)

So there you have it -- Yasminke, in her own words...
