Simon doesn’t think about it much, anymore.

He’s grown used to Serenity, the ebbs and flows of her, the hum of engines always in the background, living too close to people he cares about but doesn’t always like. It’s almost like being back in med school, except there he had the finest alcohol to drown his troubles and his father’s money to protect him.

Now he has Jayne’s cheap swill and River’s constant presence enveloping him. He can’t get away from her, and he doesn’t really try anymore. She’s wrapped herself around him like a second skin, threading through him like his nervous system, feeling everything he’s tried to forget or ignore.

She slips into bed beside him, her hands seeking, knowing, doing things brothers and sisters don’t do together. He knows she knows it’s wrong, but she can't seem to stop and he can't seem to care. He doesn’t push her away anymore, can’t bear to see the hurt in her eyes, the way she closes down and curls in on herself, more wounded child than seductive siren, but still and always his sister, his River.

His life.
