James never could say when it happened. One day, she was a swotty, skinny girl who couldn't appreciate a good prank, and the next she was Lily, red hair and green eyes and fair skin that smelled faintly of baby powder, and he couldn't stop thinking about her. She wasn't like the other girls. Sirius laughed and said she wasn't worth the trouble, not when there were a dozen other girls ready and willing to do whatever he wanted, whenever he wanted.

But James was persistent. He knew she might never say yes, but he wasn't going to stop trying. He sought her out everywhere, and even when she rebuffed him, he couldn't slow the racing of his heart for the few moments he had her full attention. It made his breath come short and his skin feel too tight, and on the rare occasions she actually touched him, he thought he might die from pleasure at the contact. It was her face he saw when he closed his eyes at night, her hands he imagined as he brought himself off, and her laughter he wished for every time he planned a prank.

Peter didn't understand, and Sirius thought he was crazy, but he thought he saw sympathy in Remus's eyes. Of course, he also thought he saw Remus watching Sirius when Sirius wasn't paying attention, with that same desperation he himself stared at Lily.

But where Remus was a pessimist, James was an optimist, and each day he woke up and thought, Today could be the day I finally win Lily round. And it was enough to keep him going until the day he finally did.
