Then the wolf shall be a guest of the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; The calf and the young lion shall browse together, with a little child to guide them. The cow and the bear shall be neighbors, together their young shall rest; the lion shall eat hay like the ox. The baby shall play by the cobra's den, and the child lay his hand on the adder's lair. Isaiah 11:6-8

"D'you want to hold him, Remus?" Lily asks, holding out the giggling Harry.

"He's such a lamb," he says indulgently, taking Harry with wonder that's never quite gone away -- wonder that James and Lily have produced a whole new person, who laughs when Remus holds him, wonder that they even let him touch their child, their miracle.

"You'd make a good father," she says.

He smiles wistfully. "I'm happy being an honorary uncle."

But on nights like these, in the warm, comforting glow of the Christmas lights, he finds himself once more wishing for things that can never be.
