What It's Like
[by victoria p.]
Rating: G
Summary: "Now you know how the rest of us feel."
Notes: Thanks as always to Jen, Pete/Melissa, Dot, and Meg. Written for Nimori, who requested "Sirius, quill, envy."
Date: March 5, 2004
Sirius sits in the Gryffindor common room, allegedly doing his Arithmancy homework, but in reality, staring at James.
Who is staring at Evans, who stares right back, the two of them wearing the widest, stupidest-looking smiles Sirius has ever seen.
Sirius remembers when he and James were inseparable, when no mere girl could come between them and their pranks and plots, their daring midnight exploits in and around Hogwarts and Hogsmeade.
Now all Evans has to do is smile and James is at her side, as if he were a love-starved crup instead of Head Boy, Quidditch Captain, and Sirius Black's best friend and co-conspirator.
Sirius tightens his fingers on his quill; his knuckles whiten with the effort and he feels as though his skin may split. The quill snaps under the pressure, shaking him out of his reverie.
He feels a feather brush his cheek and turns to see Remus sitting beside him, offering a new quill. He frowns as he takes it, wondering when Remus arrived.
"Now you know how the rest of us feel," Remus says.
Sirius shakes his head, and returns to staring at James, Remus's presence already forgotten.
