"Cheers," James grinned, raising his bottle of butterbeer.

Lily smiled back, because what else could she do? He really was quite charming when he wasn’t being an utter tosser, and though she’d never admit it aloud, she kind of liked the way his hair stood up at all angles. If she’d thought he’d had any clue, she’d have accused him of trying to look cool, but Peter assured her he’d stopped mussing his hair on purpose sometime in sixth year. If she thought about it, she remembered seeing him then -- all four of them, looking worn and haggard, with purple stains under their eyes and careless stubble shadowing their chins.

She didn’t know what it was, but something changed, and as far as James Potter was concerned, it had changed for the better.

“To us,” she said softly, sipping her drink and smiling at the stunned look on his face.
