Mrs. Dursley My dear Petunia,

It is with great regret that I write to inform you of your sister's death. She and James died valiantly, though I am sure that is no comfort in your time of sorrow. They will be dearly missed for their grace and humor, and the joy they brought into the lives of all who knew them.

There is some good news, though, and some hope for all of us living in dark times.

Their son Harry survived the attack, and, due to Lily's foresight and quick thinking, will be protected from sharing his parents' fate as long as he resides with a family member. As you are the only close blood relative Harry has left, I am asking you to take him in and raise him as your own. I know you have a son who is of an age with him, and I'm sure it will be good for them both to grow up as close as brothers.

It's what Lily would have wanted.

Only you can protect him, and in doing so, continue the work Lily and James began, helping to safeguard our society from those who would see us all exterminated.

I am sure you are worried about your own family. Rest assured that you will reside under my protection and the strongest wards we can create, to keep you and young Harry secret and safe.

I offer my undying gratitude, and the thanks of the entire wizarding world, to you and your family, and again, offer my most sincere condolences on your loss.

Your obedient servant,

Albus Dumbledore
Headmaster
Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry
