Summary: "It didn't do to let Lex get too egotistical."

Notes: Thanks as always to Jen, Pete/Melissa, Dot, and Meg. Written for goss, who requested "Lex. Rubik's cube. Smug."

Date: March 5, 2004

"The true measure of genius isn't always in creating something new, Clark," Lex said, fiddling with the Rubik's cube he kept on his desk so he'd have something to do with his hands while he pontificated. "It's in taking what's already been done and turning it to new ends. Or using what limited means are available to you to solve whatever problem is facing you at the moment, and then applying that solution on a broad scale."

Clark rolled his eyes. He'd heard all this before. But Lex was entitled to his pride. He'd just managed, with the help of LexCorp scientists, to produce a clean burning fuel out of Styrofoam, meaning that the planet would no longer be in danger of being overrun by used coffee cups that would never degrade.

Lex smirked at him, and Clark fidgeted, fighting the urge to wipe the smirk off his face with kisses. The door to the office was open, and anyone could walk in.

But it didn't do to let Lex get too egotistical.

"Voila!" Lex handed him the completed Rubik's cube, squares all lined up in their original order.

Clark felt his mouth curve in a smirk of his own, and crushed the plastic toy in his hand.

"Oops."

Lex's nostrils flared, and Clark could see he was struggling between irritation and laughter. Luckily, laughter won.

"You're lucky I like you, Kent."

Clark dropped the mangled toy to the floor and gave into his earlier urge. Kissing Lex was more fun than crushing his toys, anyway, spectators be damned.

"Mmm," he said pressing a quick kiss to the corner of Lex's mouth. "More than a Rubik's cube?"

"Much more," Lex said, his lips warm and soft on Clark's skin.

"Why don't you show me how much?"

"Ah, Clark, you're a genius."

Clark smiled smugly before kissing him.
