Remus wakes to the feel of long fingers caressing his face, long dark hair curtaining him off from the world.

"Sirius?" he asks, voice low and hoarse from the screaming. He relaxes under the familiar, long-lost, desperately-craved touch, unable to tell if he's dreaming or if last night actually happened if Sirius is really here, really innocent.

If his damned stupidity hasn't cost Sirius his freedom.

Sirius smiles down at him as if he hasn't a care in the world, his teeth yellow and his breath rancid.

He's the most beautiful thing Remus has ever seen.

"Hello, Remus."

Remus tries to shift up onto his elbows, and Sirius clucks his tongue, sounding just like Madam Pomfrey.

"It's not safe," he manages. And then, "I'm so sorry. I--"

"No more regrets," Sirius murmurs, "no more apologies." He brushes the sweat-damp hair from Remus's brow with gentle fingers. "This is a new day, a new beginning."

His mouth is soft and tentative against Remus's, and they're both desperately in need of a good tooth-brushing, but it's as thrilling as their first kiss, so many years ago. More even, now that they've lost everything and somehow got a small piece of it back again.

Remus laughs into Sirius's mouth and resolves to start every day in such an auspicious manner.
