Memento Mori
[by victoria p.]

Rating: Teen

Summary: That's not Lilly.

Notes: For Pearl-o, who requested "Lilly, confident, dress."

Date: January 30, 2005

Veronica stares at the body in the casket. The body, she thinks, not Lilly. She's dressed in a modest pink dress Veronica doesn't recognize, and she knows Lilly would have hated it. She has no doubt Mrs. Kane picked it out -- suitable attire for her dead daughter, the one who could do no right when she was alive, and was now going to be elevated to sainthood by her revisionist mother, all flaws and quirks erased, her bold confidence and take no prisoners attitude toward life forgotten, softened, with pink dresses and careful airbrushing of everybody's memories while grief was strong enough to keep the darker thoughts away.

Veronica remembers the white sparkly dress Lilly had worn to Homecoming last year, tries to fix that Lilly in her memory -- shining and sly and bright with laughter. They were happy that day, all four of them.

Veronica doubts she'll ever be that happy again.
