He got lost in New York.
It was the perfect city for it, really. So many people trying so hard to stand out, nobody would notice one man trying to fade into the furniture.
Ron found him anyway, because that’s what Ron did. Three thousand miles of ocean and eight million strangers couldn’t stymie him. Harry should have known, but he’d chosen to forget, to lose faith. Because what had faith got any of them but hurt?
His parents’ faith in their friends, Sirius’s in Dumbledore, Dumbledore’s in the prophecy, Ron and Hermione’s in him -- all of it broken, useless, false.
But Ron was waiting on the steps when Harry arrived home, hair outshining the autumn leaves in the bright, crisp afternoon sunlight, and Harry remembered what it felt like to believe, and to be believed in.
He stopped and stared, caught and unsure whether to fight or flee. Ron took the choice from him, rising to fold him in a tight embrace, his lips warm and dry against the skin of Harry’s neck.
“Hermione’s waiting, but I couldn’t wait anymore,” Ron whispered in his ear. “Please come home.”
Standing there in Ron’s arms, Harry thought he already had.
