Remus has always been a liar. Sirius knows this, has always known this, but until now, he'd always chosen to overlook it. Remus has his reasons. Sirius knows that, as well.

But things are different now. They're not boys playing pranks anymore, and more is at stake than house points. There is Harry, and Lily, and James, and that makes all the difference in the world.

Sirius wills his hands, hands that so recently held his godson close as he promised to protect him, to stop shaking as he lights another cigarette, and avoids looking directly into Remus's eyes when he speaks.

"It's been fun, Moony, but I'm not meant for this monogamous shite." He calls on every trick he's ever learned -- from his parents, from playing innocent at school, from his Order training, from Remus himself -- to sound bored and indifferent, to ignore the quick flare of pain on Remus's face before he schools his expression to that damned neutrality he wears like a mask.

"I see," is all Remus says, though his voice is rougher than usual and his hands are wrapped so tightly around his mug of tea that his knuckles are white. "I'll pack up my things, then."

"That'd be best." Sirius wants to scream at him, to hit him, to force him into fighting. Mostly, Sirius wants to tell him the truth. I love you. I've always loved you. Please tell me you're not the spy. Just say something, and I'll believe it. But Remus doesn't.

When Remus leaves, Sirius doesn't stop him.
