He proposes to her the morning after they make love for the sixth time.

She’s startled -- they've only been out of school a month, and only been together for six, though she’s known him since the first day on the Hogwarts Express, when he showed her how to pass through the column onto Platform 9¾. She can recall it clearly, hazel eyes behind smudged glasses, hair that looked as if he’d been dragged through a hedge backward, though his clothes were clean and obviously expensive.

“I’ve known from the day we met,” he says, as if reading her mind. “You looked so scared and you were trying to hide it. And your hair was the prettiest thing I’d ever seen.”

“Which is why you spent three years pulling it and dipping it in ink and turning it blue?” she asks, but affectionately, pressing little kisses to his shoulder as they lie on the grass.

He blushes, which she finds utterly charming. Remus has told her she’s the only person who’s capable of making James blush, and she holds that power jealously, along with everything else to do with him.

"Had to make you notice me." As if she'd ever not noticed him. She brushes her fingers through his hair, a mess as always, and he says, “So, will you, Lily? Please?”

She laughs and kisses his red and swollen lips, which taste of him and her and something she always thinks of as magic, if magic has a taste.

“Yes, James, I will.”
