Even to the Gates of Daylight
[by victoria p.]
Rating: G
Summary: He knew he was meant to be here with Ged.
Notes: for leianora, who requested Ged and Vetch before confronting Ged's shadow
Date: February 11, 2004
When Ged had said, "I thought you would know me," it had torn at Vetch's heart. He did know Ged, better than any man alive, perhaps. But this was more than even he understood, though he knew, bone-deep, in the way of wizards, that he was meant to be here with Ged on the open sea, chasing his shadow.
He watched as Ged curled up, unable to sleep, sure his hour was drawing near. Vetch found himself reaching out, longing to touch that scarred face, chase the ghosts from those haunted eyes. His heart thudded in his chest like the beat of the oars upon the water. When Ged looked up, surprised, Vetch felt sure he must be able to hear it, so loud was the sound in his own ears.
"Estarriol," he murmured, taking his outstretched hand. Vetch felt warmth flood his body. "Thank you for coming with me."
"Of course, Ged. Even to the gates of daylight and beyond."
Vetch moved to sit beside him, tenderly brushing sea-damp hair off his forehead. Ged sighed and tucked Vetch's hand beneath his cheek as his eyes fluttered closed. Vetch hoped that now he would be able to sleep.
