The Flavor of Goodbye

Summary: "I will love you forever, but it's over."

Date: July 8, 2005

Sirius is rough, sloppy, desperate, and James knows he knows, because even without telling him, Sirius knows what he's thinking, what he's feeling. He always has. Maybe he always will. But James can't do this, can't feel this anymore, not now that Lily has said yes, that he's slipped a ring on her finger and asked her to share his life with him.

"I love you," he murmurs against Sirius's lips, red and kiss-swollen and still dizzying, drugging, after all the years they've been doing this. "I will love you forever," he promises, "but we can't do this anymore."

"We?" Sirius asks, those full lips now twisting in disdain. "You mean you can't."

James nods, brushing Sirius's fringe off his forehead, running his thumb over the perfect arch of his cheek. "I can't. This was never meant to be forever. You know that."

It is Sirius's turn to nod, because he does, but it doesn't make it hurt any less for either of them. James kisses his forehead gently and then his lips again, one final time, and he learns the flavor of goodbye.
