The Fifth Wand

Remus forces himself to remain still under Ollivander's knowing gaze.

"Willow, ten inches, unicorn hair core."

His mother's hand tightens on his shoulder. She's fought so hard for this. If he can't find a usable wand, it will have all been in vain. He'll not go to Hogwarts.

He thinks Ollivander knows, though his face shows only professional curiosity.

Remus takes the wand, the fifth he's tried, and waves it warily. It warms and hums in his hand, silver sparks erupting from the tip. He and his mother sigh in relief. Ollivander nods.

"Good luck, Mr. Lupin. You'll need it."
