You remember a time when his eyes weren't dark with hate for you. You don't think you imagined it, but it was twenty years ago, and maybe your memories are wrong.

Needless to say, it didn't matter, because there was always Sirius, and Sirius always came first. You can't -- don't -- regret that, even now, though you know other people think you mad for loving him, then and now.

But he's gone, and you're here, you and Severus and twenty years of hatred burying the seeds of something else.

You've been watching him and you know he knows. He brings you the Wolfsbane, your fingers brushing his as he hands you the goblet, and he no longer flinches away. It seems natural -- right -- to put the goblet down on the table and pull him toward you.

You can feel his pulse beating a rapid tattoo against your fingers on his wrist, and he breathes in harsh counterpoint to you as you press your lips to his -- softer and warmer than you'd expected. He sighs into your mouth and you graze his jaw with the back of your hand before he pulls away, startled.

"I don't need your pity," he snaps.

"Good, because I'm not offering it."

His face is neutral, but his eyes no longer burn with hatred, and his tone isn't as venomous as it once was when he says, "Take your potion."

"Thank you, Severus," you reply, and you drain the cup to its dregs.
