When I was born, they looked at me and said,
What a good boy,
what a smart boy,
what a strong boy

"Someone has to do something," Ginny said, looking at Hermione, who looked at him. Hermione was on the verge of tears again.

"Gin--"

"You know I'm right."

And the thing was, he did. But having DA meetings without Harry seemed wrong, somehow. Then again, everything seemed wrong since Harry had disappeared one day between Quidditch practice and dinner, though Dumbledore and McGonagall tried to act as if nothing had changed.

"I'll do it," someone said. Ron was almost as surprised as they that the voice was his.

"Ron," Hermione said, voice low and urgent. "Ron--"

"Someone has to," he answered, raising his chin, daring her to disagree. "Tonight after dinner." Hermione stared at him, and he could feel himself being weighed and measured. "Do it."

"Ron," she said again, and part of him wanted to laugh hysterically. Wasn't there some sort of magic in repeating a name three times? He couldn't remember if that was true or just part of an old Muggle fairytale his father had read to him as a child.

"Someone has to." His own magical mantra.

With a sigh, she touched her wand to the coin. "I hope you know what you're doing."

"So do I."

They were already milling around outside the Room of Requirement when Ron, Hermione and Neville arrived. He could hear the whispers, Harry's name like a roll of distant thunder as he pushed open the door and moved to the front of the room, and then the deflating sigh when they realized Harry hadn't returned.

"Listen up, you lot," he barked, calling up memories of watching Oliver Wood run Quidditch practice to help him control the group. "I don't know any more than you do, but what I do know is that Harry wanted--he wants you to be able to protect yourselves. So we're just going to keep going." Before anyone could object, he said, "Neville, you work with Colin. Ginny, you're with Zacharias."

His hands had stopped shaking by the time he had them all paired off, Hermione waiting patiently for him, eyes shining this time with pride instead of tears.

He could do this. He had to. When Harry came back -- and Ron was certain he would -- they would all be ready.
