"Did I ever tell you, did I ever tell you that you never needed us?"

Remus ducks his head, unable to hold Sirius’s clear grey gaze, a long-forgotten mannerism covering long-forgotten feelings. No, that’s not quite right. He’s never forgotten that he had the feelings; he’d just forgotten what they’d actually felt like, this electric humming in his veins, ready to spark to lightning on his skin when Sirius looks at him that way.

“You’re daft,” he says, and Sirius nods, laughing.

“Yeah, maybe. But you-- You were always so damned self-sufficient.”

Remus shakes his head. “I became self-sufficient, after-- I had to. But --"

“No, you never needed us.” Sirius leans his head against the window, his breath fogging the glass. “We needed you to need us, so you pretended you did. And we had a lot of fun. But we all knew--"

Remus can’t seem to draw a breath, his chest tight with anger and old desire renewed, still unrequited. “What did you know, Sirius?” he chokes out. “You knew nothing. Nothing.”

Sirius breathes on the glass again, writes his name in the condensation. “Because you wouldn’t let me in.”

Remus watches the letters fade, air and water, ephemeral and everlasting, and knows his last chance goes with them.

“Please,” he says finally, before it’s completely gone, traces still lingering on the dirty glass. “I can’t--"

Sirius turns back to him then. “I know,” he says, and he holds out his hand.
