I'm in for a love so tough i could break my teeth if i bit down hard upon it
And a voice so rich just the sound of it is forever nauseating

a love so tough

When Remus looks at Sirius, he tries not to see twelve lost years, tries not to imagine what might have been.

He doesn’t mention the way his own life exploded, to be carefully mended over the years, like a chipped china cup he can't bear to part with -- damaged but still useful, a reminder to them all of what was lost. He knows there’s no comparison.

Remus doesn’t talk about regrets. That’s for Sirius to do, on long, lonely winter’s nights over too much firewhisky, the two of them pretending to be fine because they don’t know what else to do.

He doesn’t think about the words he didn’t -- couldn't -- say then, and can’t say now.

Remus loves Sirius quietly, unrequitedly, the way he’s always done, and waits for Sirius to leave again, the way he always does.

Remus doesn’t think he’s a masochist, but he’s been wrong before.
