Summary: Mal wants to earn that smile.

Sometimes, when she smiles at him, he finds it hard to speak. He wants to earn that smile, wants her to smile it for no one else, just him and Serenity, which is nearly the same thing. It's greedy, and he's never been a greedy man -- he just wants room enough to stand, space enough to fly. He's got that, in Serenity, and Serenity brought him Kaylee.

Pretty Kaylee, with her skillful, callused hands so often black with grease, brings Serenity to life, makes her hum. More and more often lately, in the privacy of his bunk, Mal wishes she would do the same for him.
