They really are beautiful, in a distant, serene way.

I´ve always seen them as eternally vigilant sentinels, silently bearing witness to the deeds of men. As a young girl, gazing enraptured at the night sky when these same stars hung almost low enough to touch, I dreamed of dancing among them.

I´m closer to realizing that dream now than ever. Floating weightlessly into the landing vehicle, I wave a small salute to the Dog Head nebula that glows at the edge of the ruddy horizon of my new home, Mars.

The stars will wait patiently. I will not.
